Hinojosa to Speak at Human Rights Day Event

Award-winning journalist and author Maria Hinojosa will speak at an evening event to celebrate Human Rights Day on Dec. 7.
The event runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Town Hall, 1111 Eighth Ave.
The theme of the event is "Human Rights: Crossing All Borders." Hinojosa is host of "Latino USA" on National Public Radio and senior correspondent for the PBS newsmagazine program NOW. During her career, Hinojosa received numerous awards for stories such as, "Manhood Behind Bars," "Kids and Guns" "and "Immigrant Nation: Divided Country."
Her books include Crews: Gang Members Talk with Maria Hinojosa and Raising Raul: Adventures in Raising Myself and My Son.
As part of this year's celebration, Hinojosa also will speak at an event from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church's Drury Hall, Fifth Avenue and Columbia Street.
Both events are free and open to the public.
The festivities of this year's Human Rights Day event will include the presentation of the 2006 Human Rights Distinguished Citizen Awards to the Transgender Jail Policy Group, Magdaleno Rose-Avila and Washington State Veterans for Peace chapters.
The annual Seattle Human Rights Day event commemorates the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted Dec. 10, 1948.
The day is sponsored by the Seattle Office for Civil Rights, Seattle Human Rights Commission and United Nations Association of Seattle. Co-sponsors include the NAACP-Seattle Chapter, the University of Washington Multicultural Alumni Partnership, the King County Civil Rights Commission and others.
